You bought a beautiful bed, but your cat has chosen the cardboard box again. Sound familiar? Comfort is not always about the object itself. Location, a familiar scent and the chance to stay out of the way can matter more.

Start by observing

Where does your companion usually rest? Do they choose sunshine in the morning and shade later on? Would they rather be near people or somewhere quieter? Their choices can help you find a good place for a bed or familiar blanket.

There is no need to move an animal into the “right” spot. Offer a few safe options and give them time to choose.

Away from the busy bits

A quiet corner works best when people do not have to walk past it all day. Think about everyday sounds too: the washing machine, the front door or a loud television.

  • Choose a stable base and a material that is easy to keep clean.
  • If you use a box, remove staples, loop handles and small loose parts.
  • Windows and balconies need suitable protection. An ordinary insect screen is not designed to support an animal’s weight.

Let rest be rest

Agree as a household that a resting animal can stay in their corner without being pulled out for a game or photograph. Children can enjoy watching from a distance and wait for the animal to come over when they want company.

A gentle experiment: offer a familiar blanket in two different quiet places over a few days. Notice what your companion chooses, without steering them towards your favourite.
